The History of the
original Balkan Restaurant

In 1964 a young emigre couple, from the beautiful coastal city of Dubrovnik and the Island of Korcula, opened the doors to the Balkan Continental Restaurant for the very first time on Sydney's iconic Oxford Street. They combined their traditional Croatian recipes with the fresh seafood and locally grown produce, found in abundance in their new home.

From the very first day the Balkan Continental Restaurant provided their clients with generous portions of their specialties in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Over the years the couple built up their restaurant, they were like parents to students looking for that home cooked meal, comfort for those far from home looking for that little bit of familiar flavour and a warm place for the locals and tourists alike.

As time went by the Balkan Continental Restaurant thrived and established itself as a fundamental part of the local community. That young couple that opened the doors all those years ago have now retired and their son and his wife has taken over the management of the restaurant.

In 2012 the restaurant relocated to the now thriving Crown St and reopened its doors as The Original Balkan Restaurant. The family still manage the restaurant supported by their loyal team and provide the same great food and service in the new vibrant location. If you take a moment to observe your surroundings on your visit you will see cathedral ceilings, pictures of Dubrovnik and Korcula adorning the walls and sense that you are somewhere special.

Today you can travel the world and you will meet people in London, New York, Tokyo, Dubrovnik, any where your travels take you that know the Balkan and have great memories of their visit and food enjoyed. Come and visit and be a part of our future and create history and memories with us.
